Native Prairie Plot
- Today, over 99% of Illinois’ native tallgrass prairie ecosystem has been destroyed due to plowing and paving. Prairie plants can withstand drought and they provide important wildlife habitat. The Illinois Wesleyan Prairie Plot contains only native plants to Illinois, and was established as a student initiative in the Spring of 2009. It is located by the side of CNS, across from Saga. All of the seeds were collected, bought, or donated by IWU students and members of the community. The prairie is also maintained by Illinois Wesleyan students through SSC.
Illinois Wesleyan University Peace Garden
-The Illinois Wesleyan University Peace Garden was founded in 2012 by the IWU Peace Fellows. Produce grown through the garden will be given to local food banks, sold to the IWU community, and available at on-campus dining facilities when in season. Information about the garden and current volunteer opportunities can be found at the Peace Garden official Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/IWU-Peace-Garden/332735410090470. Or their official blog: http://blogs.iwu.edu/iwupeacegarden/.
The garden will also serve as “a nonviolent space for IWU students to reflect and socialize while engaging in a respectful relationship with the environment”. It is located across from the practice football field, next to BroMenn Hospital on the corner of Francis Street and Prospect Avenue in Bloomington. The Peace Garden meets every Saturday at 12 at the Peace Garden, or in the Hansen Student Center if the weather is bad.
