There are so many fabulous things about our house, it's hard to list them all. But we'll try....
Our house was built in 1868 with the sole purpose of being a home. It was not built to be a dorm or any other type of college living unit. The warm, home-like atmosphere that results from this is one of our house's greatest attributes. We love that we have an actual home away from home.
The most famous room in our house is our rec room. It's big enough that it can accomodate our entire house when we're watching American Idol, TLC and Cubs games. There's also a VCR/DVD player in there, which is great for movie nights, along with what could quite possibly be the world's most comfortable couches.
We also have three front rooms where girls are always studying and hanging out. The reception room overlooks our gorgeous front yard and has awesome couches and window seats where girls can study or talk in a room that is usually quiet. The music room is also great for studying, but also has a grand piano which comes in use for our several music and vocal performance majors. The living room is great for entertaining guests, doing homework, having small meetings, or just sitting around and doing nothing at all! The decor in these rooms looks very formal but don't be fooled. We wear our pajamas around; it is a very chilled, relaxed atmosphere.
We also have a study room that is always quiet. There are computers and printers avaliable for members to use, along with a brand new scanner/copy machine/fax machine. This especially comes in handy for the girls in our house who don't have their own computers. The members who have their own computers take advantage of our wireless ethernet. It greatly reduces the mess of tons of hookup wires, and those of us who have laptops can go online in any part of the house, in the backyard, or on the swing on our front porch!
Our laundry room has new washers and dryers that can be used for free. There's no hassle of trying to find quarters every time we want to do laundry!
Our rooms are huge and have tons of floor space. We all have our own desks and at least one dresser for ourselves. And we have TONS of closet space. In addition to the closets in our rooms, there's extra closet space all over the house that we use. We have so much more space than we had in the dorms. We also have an attic in which we store other items. It comes in handy for those who live out of state or don't go home frequently.
We also have large bathrooms located throughout the house. There's never a shower line and there's always hot water. We also undertake them as fun interior decorating projects.
One of the most important places in the house (since we love to eat) is our huge kitchen where we have our own refrigerators, a pop machine that only charges 40 cents, a kitchen table and breakfast bar that are famous for late night leftover sessions, along with year round supplies of milk, juice, bread, pb&j, eggs, cereal, fruit and veggies.
We also have a dining room with more than enough tables to sit us all during meals. We eat lunch and dinner together every day. Meals are always a great time to catch up with each other, eat our yummy food, and hang out with our awesome houseboys. Our houseboys are Sigma Pi's who serve us our meal and do our dishes in exchange for food. However, they are not just employees, but our friends, too, and we love hanging out with them either during meals, at the Pi house, or late at night when they come knocking on the door begging for mac n' cheese. We truly have the world's greatest houseboys.
Our house director, Amita, is new this year. She is a 29-year old grad student from ISU and she is- in a word- amazing. She's the equivalent of a big sister to us, always willing to help us out in any way she can, even if it means running to Kroger at 2 in the morning because we're out of milk. We love her and are so grateful to have her with us.
We also have a fix-it man, Rodney, who fixes everything from broken doorknobs to cracked shelves and lightbulbs that are out of reach. Our house is in the great shape it is because of him.
We have air conditioning, too, which is a lifesaver when it's so hot. It is refreshing to stay cool while sleeping or getting ready to go out.
We also have a great new intercom and phone system so that we can receive phone calls when we're in any part of the house, not just our rooms. And we all have our own voicemails so we don't miss calls when out!
We always feel safe in our house because of our security system. We have a standard external alarm system and also an internal alarm system that can be triggered by several stations throughout the house. Thankfully, we've never had to use the internal system, but it's great to know that it's there if we need it.
We also have a huge parking lot where we all have our own spots. It's so nice to not have to park blocks away, especially when it's late at night or freezing cold out.
As great as our home is, it's important to know that we love Alpha Gamma Delta for the girls in the house. We are blessed to have an amazing home, but we consider that an added bonus. Therefore, we encourage anyone who is going through recruitment to choose a house for the girls they will call their sisters and not for the building they will live in.
