2002-2003 Events

Ice Cream Social Tuesday, September 24th, 2002

Our Ice Cream Social was a success this year, drawing some 30 students and all econ faculty. After introductions form the professors and Econ Society exec board members, we briefly discussed upcoming events and committee signups, recruited some people for the Park Place Economist, and ate lots and lots of delicious ice cream. Thanks to all those who came, and we hope to see you at upcoming events.

Homecoming Tailgating Friday, October 4th, 2002 4:30-6:00 pm at Shirk Center

Econ society had set up a booth to dispense information about its activities. As a fun offering, Mahi offered to do henna for anyone who was willing to try it.

Speaker Presentation: Jennifer VanDyke '99 "Economic Problems of Hospitals" Wednesday, October 9th, 2002

Jennifer Van dyke, a department alum, talked about her work as a health care consultant in helping hospitals meet their economic challenges.

Speaker Presentation: Dr. David Vance Wednesday, October 23rd, 2002

Dr. David Vance, president of the Caterpillar University, gave his annual talk to our campus about the general state of the economy. The issues he talked about include the possibility of a double dip recession, the economic slump of Japan and economic consequences of a possible war with Iraq.

Making Neigborhoods Work Saturday, October 26th, 2002 8:00 am

About 100 neighborhood association leaders and community members of Bloomington gathered to discuss the issues and problems facing their neighborhoods in this conference hosted by the Economics department and Illinois Wesleyan University. Session topics ranged from home financing to downtown revival to the history of Bloomington neighborhoods.

Panel Discussion: Economic Consequences of a war with Iraq Monday, October 28th, 2002, 12 noon

Professors Alan Cring and Diego Méndez-Carbajo, along with Kory Blumer '03 and George Coontz '02 formed a discussion panel that talked about the possible economic implications of a war with Iraq and fielded questions from the audience on the topic.

Movie night at Dr. Seeborg's House Tuesday, Novemeber 12th, 2002, 7:00 pm

Ever thought an Economist could be the subject of a Hollywood movie? About 10 of us along with Dr. Leekley gathered at Dr. Seeborg's house to watch "A beautiful mind"- a movie based on the life and work of John Nash (of the famous Nash equilibrium). We also had Pizza and a great time!

Speaker Presentation: Dr. Jim Moser "A day in the life of a Federal Reserve Economist" Wednesday, November 20th, 2002

Dr. Jim Moser is a Economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. He talked about the history, structure and activities of the Federal Reserve System, as well its role in the formulation and implementation of monetary policies

Brown Bag Luncheon and Discussion: The Current Administrations's Tax Cut proposal Wednesday, January 29th, 2003

Professor Alan Cring, Professor Seeborg and Junior Economics major George Coontz formed a panel that discussed the impact of George Bush's Tax Cuts. Several other professors and students also contributed to the discussion.

Speaker Presentation : The Economics Behind Successful Business Strategies Wednesday, March 12, 2002 7:00 pm

Mark Israel '91, professor of Management and Strategy at Kellog School of Management, Northwestern University, talked about how economic principles are used to formulate successful business strategies.
