2001-2002 Events

Ice Cream Social Monday, September 24th, 2001

Our Ice Cream Social was a success this year, drawing some 30 students and 5 out of the 6 econ faculty. After introductions form the professors and Econ Society exec board members, we briefly discussed upcoming events and committee signups, recruited some people for the Park Place Economist, and ate lots and lots of delicious ice cream. Thanks to all those who came, and we hope to see you at upcoming events.

Brown Bag Lunch Discussion Monday, October 1st, 2001

We staged a lunchtime discussion of the economic impacts and implications of the attacks of Septmeber 11th. Topics we discussed included the status of the budget surplus, the futures of the insurance and airline industries, the effects of heightened security measures, and the importance of consumer and investor confidence to the economy. All 6 economics professors attended. Lunch was provided by Saga.

Speaker: Ken Browning Wednesday, October 17th, 2001

Ken Browning, the university's Vice President for Business and Finance, gave a presentation on the finances of the university and the effects of the weakening stock market on the university's endowment. He presented a detailed university budget and talked about trends in university cost and revenue flows.

Trip to Western Illinois University Friday, October 26th, 2001

Dr. Seeborg cancelled his Senior Project classes and took a van full of students to the Annual Economics Conference at WIU in Macomb, Illinois. The conference, titled "The New Information Age: Still No Free Lunch?" consisted of student and professor presentations, including a presentation from IWU's Katia Hristova on property rights in an international economy. Katia gave a great presentation and was a star of the conference. The conference sponsors proved that sometimes there is a free lunch by providing free dinner, drinks, and textbooks to those in attendance. Brown Bag Lunch Discussion Monday, October 29th, 2001

We had our second brown bag lunch of the year to meet Javier Stanziola and discuss his research. Javier talked about government funding of the arts and how economists look at the arts, a market filled with externalities. Avanti's sandwiches, chips, and pop were provided to all those in attendance.

Javier Stanziola is an Ph.D. economist who is an assistant professor at Flordia Gulf Coast University. His research centers on cultural economics, specifically the economic impact of the arts. He has written a book titled Arts, Government and Community Revitalization which dealt with the relationship between cultural activities and community development. He will be giving a presentation about his work, asking whether or not economists have anything to say about the arts. He gave a good speech which was enjoyed by all, and provided students with a different perspective on a topic they might not have known much about.

Several econ seniors celebrated the completion of the rough drafts of their senior projects by meeting at Mugsy's and sharing fried cheese balls, cheap beer, and good times.

Movie night at Dr. Seeborg's House Thursday, November 29th, 2001

Dr. Seeborg hosted about 20 econ majors at his house. He and his wife served us lots of good Chinese food and Dr. Seeborg talked at leangth about Tai Chi. We then watched Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. A good time was had by all. Go to our pictures section to see a group photo.

Dr. Moser from the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago gave his speech "A Day in the Life of a Federal Reserve Economist". He described his job functions and recruited students for jobs and internships with the fed.

In what is quickly becoming tradition, economics seniors again met at Mugsy's, this time to celebrate the completion of the final draft of their senior projects. All 5 economics faculty came as well. There's talk of making this a weekly Thursday night thing...

Pizza and Internship Luncheon Wednesday, January 30, 2002

We kicked off a new semester with free pizza and a panel discussion hosted by 5 econ seniors who discussed their internship experiences. Warren Kistner also gave a short presentation on how to go about searching for internships.

The Rob & Bob Show Wednesday, February 13, 2002

The Rob and Bob show made its annual appearence in February. ROb and Bob discussed the banking industry, credit cards, credit unions, and government intervention. Hosted by Rob Fazzini, an IWU alum who is currently head of the Busey Bank in Bloomington and Bob Arnold, former IWU Communications Director, students have always enjoyed the show.

Economics Society/ Accounting Society Bowling Competition Thursday, February 21, 2002

With a performance that could only be described as transcendent, the econ society's annual bowling-based thrashing of the accounting society continued in vigor this February. Led by a high game of 152 from Dr. Seeborg, the economists charged to an average of 101.5 pins/person. Despite a strong game from econ society treasurer Wes, the accounting society languished with an average of 96.53 pins/person. The econ society, graceful as always, was present Wednesday, February 27 to cheer on Accounting Society President Jim Muellens as he crawled on their hands on knees around the third floor of the CLA to fulfil a pre-match bet.

Information Meeting for Potential Future Econ Society Officers Tuesday, February 26, 2002

Interested underclassmen met at Tommy's during one of our executive board meetings to get a feel for what we do and what the officer positions involve. Elections for the 2002-2003 executive board will be held after spring break.

Extra Credit Session: Presentations by economics seniors Wednesday, March 11, 2002

4 IWU econ seniors gave presentations at the Midwest Economics Association's conference in Chicago the first week of spring break. The Wednesday before the MEA conference, they shared their research with IWU econ students in an extra credit session for ECON 100. Presenters were Debbie Slezak, Katia Hristova, David Janashvili, and Jeremy Sandford.

ODE Banquet and speaker Thursday, April 11, 2002

Eligible economics students were initiated into the Economics honor society, ODE, and seniors were bade farewell. Our special guest for dinner, Dr. Larry Neal from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, then give a presentation afterwards on the Euro and its future.

Chicago Trip Friday, April 19, 2002

The Econ Society, along with business organizations, sponsored a trip to Chicago to see the Board of Trade and a Cubs game. The Cubs won 5-2.

Seniors celebrated the end of classes in their usual fashion, by meeting at Mugsy's. Dr. Leekley and Dr. Seeborg were present as well.
