Economics Society Programs (1998-1999)

Programming for the Economics Society covers a wide range of enriching activities. These are outlined below.

Major Trip: We believe it to be extremely beneficial to seek speakers and visit establishments outside the local area, especially in the major surrounding cities. Ideally, two of these kinds of trips are planned each year, but we often opt to take one and make it worthwhile. This year, we visited the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago to speak with its economic research team. As a part of the same trip, we also visited the Chicago Board of Trade and witnessed the closing of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. The itinerary for the trip was as follows:

7:00 AM--Left for the Windy City
10:30 AM--Toured the Chicago Board of Trade
11:15 AM--Toured the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago
12:00 PM--Spoke with Carl Hunter, Senior Vice President of the Chicago Fed's Economic Research and Monetary Policy Department
1:00 PM--Lunch
2:00 PM--Visited the Mercantile Exchange and witnessed the close at 3:00

Local Trips: We also believe in taking advantage of local opportunities. We usually plan three local trips per year. This past semester, we visited Mitsubishi Motor Manufacturing of America right here in Normal, Illinois. We are always brainstorming for different types of trips. If you have any suggestions, feel free to contact us!

Social Events: We plan two social events, one at the end of each semester. These are merely activities to take our minds off school and to promote cooperative spirit among students and faculty. It has been tradition at the end of the year for students (all invited!) to take on the faculty in a friendly game of volleyball.
