FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
- I have never done yoga in my life. Should I attend your class? Are there any prerequisites?
Even if you have never done yoga or you don’t know anything about yoga, we recommend that you visit our class. We don’t have any prerequisites. Also, if you think you are not that flexible, it is not a problem at all. Our yoga class is for everyone. And, the most important thing is our class is free.
- I am a Christian. Do I have to sacrifice my religion by doing yoga?
Yoga can be done be anyone regardless of creed, belief or religion. It is universal to humanity. It is true that it was created by the Hindus thousands of years ago in India, and they used yoga to reach spiritual enlightenment. But, it didn’t have anything to do with Hinduism, and it is now used all over the world to not only reach spiritual enlightenment but also reach physical benefits.
- What should I bring if I am coming to your class?
You do not need to bring a mat or towel, but if you want to, you are welcome. The floor of South Classroom at Shirk is well-carpeted and clean.
- Should I attend Level I or II?
If you have never attended our yoga class, we recommend that you attend Level 1. But, if you have previous yoga experience, and when you look at the curriculum, you find that you are familiar with most of the poses there, we suggest that you attend our Level II Class.
For those who have attended our yoga class, if you have come to more than three classes in Level I, definitely Level II is the appropriate level for you.
For those who have attended less than three classes, you can either repeat Level I or come to those classes to learn poses that you haven’t learnt yet. You can have a look at our curriculum on this website.
- Okay, I decided to come to your class. Do I need any preparation?
Come with an open mind, that’s the prerequisite. Besides, don’t eat at least one hour, if possible two hours, before coming to class.
- Who are you guys? What is the yoga club at IWU?
Yoga club is a club entirely run by students with the logistic support of Wellness Center at Shirk. We informally teach various yoga poses and the philosophy behind them. We offer free classes, and both students and faculty are welcome.
Four of us (Satish Lohani, Jodie Daquilanea, Kate Davis, and Kaushik Bhatia) are teaching various classes at the moment. We all are students at IWU, and we all had considerable yoga experience, both with practicing and teaching. Our previous semester of teaching yoga classes was pretty successful, and we learned a lot from that experience.
- I am interested in teaching yoga classes in the future. How can I do that?
If interested, you should come and talk to us as soon as possible. You should attend at least 60% of classes from both Level 1 and Level 2, or if you have had yoga background, you can attend only Level 2. We will train you very well so that you are able to teach yoga poses and the philosophy behind them to your students.
Teaching is a very worthwhile experience. It not only increases your public speaking skills, but also benefits your IWU academic and extra-curricular experience.
- I have a very busy schedule. Can I attend only some of your classes?
Sure. A lot of students have done in the past, and you can come to the yoga class whenever you have a free time. Learning two or three yoga poses is better than learning nothing at all.
