Writing
There are many excellent resources for writing on the web. If you did not purchase a writing handbook for the class, you can find all of the needed information online instead. Even if you do have a handbook, you will find that these online resources can provide further details or material not included in the printed book.
- IWU Writing Center Student Resources — Citation style guides; quick overviews of important skills and techniques; links to other guides and resources.
- Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) — An excellent source for suggestions about the writing process, many useful writing skills, punctuation and grammar rules, etc.; includes exercises. Try using the search page or the site map to find a particular topic.
- Jack Lynch's Guide to Grammar and Style is organized by topic alphabetically, with clear, concise descriptions of each. Some may prefer its clear organization, though one generally needs to know the name of what one is looking for. Try the contents page for browsing or searching quickly for a term.
- Common Errors in English Usage is again organized alphabetically by word/phrase. It is excellent for quickly looking up additional information on a particular error in one's writing.
There are many, many other sources of writing guides and references on the web. If you find or know of one that works particularly well for you, please let us know in the discussion forum on the Moodle.
Research Guides
Librarians at the Ames Library have put together a range of LibGuides, each of which contains pointers to sources available in the library related to a particular topic. Two that are particularly relevant to our topic are:
(Within each guide, the resources are found by using the green tabs at the top of the page.)
These guides are both maintained by the library liaison for this class, Chris Sweet, who can help you with these and any other resources in the library.

Part of the role of the Gateway Experience is to introduce you to life (academic and otherwise) at Illinois Wesleyan. These links provide resources for that aspect of the course.
- Academic Success Strategies — Guides and links to other resources for topics such as time management, studying skills, transitioning to college, etc.
- Study Abroad — I am a huge proponent of study abroad. Get some info and think about it, even if you don't think you need to think about it right now.
- First-Year Advising — Contains a link to the first-year advising handbook, which is an invaluable resource for navigating requirements and planning your path here at IWU.
