Carren Moham to Perform "Women’s Songs" at Faculty Recital

Oct. 29, 2002

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. –With upcoming performances in New York City, Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia, Carren Moham, assistant professor of voice at Illinois Wesleyan University, is a busy person.

In an effort to set an example for her students on how to carry out a vocal recital while sustaining her love for performing on stage, Moham will perform in a faculty recital on campus entitled "Women’s Songs." All of the songs and arias on the program are pieces which characterize strong women.

The recital will be held Sunday, Nov. 3, at 5:00 p.m. in Westbrook Auditorium of Presser Hall, 303 E. University Ave., Bloomington.

This will be Moham’s second faculty recital since joining IWU in the fall of 1998.

Moham will sing works by composers George Fredrich Handel, Robert Schumann, Claude Debussy, and Dorothy Rudd Moore. She will be accompanied by her close friend and colleague R. Kent Cook, assistant professor of piano at IWU since 1999.

In addition to being accompanied by Cook, Moham will be assisted on violin by Sarah Gentry, associate professor of violin at Illinois State University, in Moore’s "Sonnets on Love, Rosebuds and Death." Moham said that this was the right time to sing Moore’s cycle. "I sang the cycle when I was younger," said Moham "I understand it more now that I’ve matured, and I can express Moore’s tone better now than when I was in my early twenties."

Originally from Oklahoma, Moham holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree from Northeastern State University, a Master of Music in Voice degree from the University of Oklahoma and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Vocal Pedagogy and Black Music Studies from the Ohio State University. Moham has won numerous competitions, including, the Metropolitan Opera Auditions and the Leontyne Price Vocal Competition, and was recently chosen for inclusion in the 2002-2003 edition of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.

Cook, a native of Texas, attended Baylor University and completed a degree in piano performance. He continued his studies at Indiana University, receiving both a masters and doctorate in piano performance. Before moving to Illinois, he was a faculty member at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind.

Gentry received a Bachelor of Music degree from Louisiana State University and the Master of Music from Yale University. She earned her Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University.
