IWU School of Theatre Arts to Present The Winter's Tale

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.--The Winter's Tale, a tragicomedy by Shakespeare about death, repentance, and rebirth is the closing show of the Illinois Wesleyan University School of Theatre Arts 2001-2002 Season. The show will be performed in the McPherson Theatre, 304 E. Graham St., Bloomington, and runs from April 16-19 at 8 p.m. There also will be a matinee performance on April 21 at 2 p.m.

Set in Sicilia and Shakespeare’s mythical Bohemia, the premise of The Winter's Tale centers around the destructive effects of King Leonetes’ jealousy. By accusing his wife of infidelity, King Leonetes sets off a dark chain of events including the banishment of his daughter, estrangement from his best friend, and the death of his wife and son. It takes 16 years to heal and undo all the damage that King Leonetes’ folly accomplished, through coincidence, goodwill and a miracle.

"I selected this play because it’s a great story that’s entertaining and involves tragedy, comedy, and a cast of interesting and engaging characters," said Sandra Lindberg, assistant professor of theatre arts and director of A Winter’s Tale. "On an analytical level, there are so many different themes running in this rough fairytale including healing, forgiveness, preservation, folkloric female energy and the adverse effects of jealousy."

Tickets may be purchased by calling the McPherson Theatre box office at 309/556-3232. Adult admission is $4 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and for Sunday matinee, and $6 for Thursday through Saturday. Senior citizens receive a dollar discount, and students with a valid ID are admitted for $1.
