May 15, 2003

Anne Herrmann, a 2003 graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University and German and international business major from Freeport, Ill., has been awarded a prestigious scholarship by the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange.

The scholarship program, which is designed to use cultural exchange to give participants an understanding of everyday life, education, and professional training in Germany, is funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State and the Administration of the Bundestag.

The exchange immerses 60 young adults interested in the fields of business, technology, and agriculture into a 12-month program consisting of two months of intensive German, four months of classroom instruction at a German university, and five months of an internship in a German career field.

The scholarship covers funding of international airfare, local transportation, language training, orientation, mid-year and final seminars, sickness and accident insurance, host family compensation or other accommodation costs, and a stipend for personal expenses. The responsibilities of participants include diplomatic representation of the United States while abroad, as well as involvement in an orientation seminar in Washington, D.C. and a program evaluation in New York City.
