Illinois Wesleyan University Mathematics Professor Wins Award

Illinois Wesleyan Mathematics Professor Tian-Xiao He received the American Mathematical Society Award at the International Congress of Mathematicians held in Beijing, China. The meeting, which took place August 20-28, 2002, is held every four years, and this year featured talks by Nobel Prize-winning Physicist Stephen Hawking and Nobel Prize-winning Mathematician John Nash, in addition to an address by He.

The award, in the amount of $1,900, recognizes the high quality of four journal articles and a monograph published by He between 1990 and 2001.

He, who joined the Illinois Wesleyan faculty in 1991, received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics from the Hefei University of Technology in China. He also has two doctorates—mathematics from China’s Dalian University of Technology and applied mathematics from Texas A&M University.

The American Mathematical Society was founded in 1888 to further mathematical research and scholarship. The Society currently has approximately 30,000 members throughout the United States and around the world. The society fulfills its mission through programs that promote mathematical research, increase the awareness of the value of mathematics to society, and foster excellence in mathematics education.
