Date: Nov. 6, 2002 (Wednesday)

Time: 11:00 a.m.

Background: Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. It is during this month that Muslims observe the Fast of Ramadan. Lasting for the entire month, Muslims fast during the daylight hours and in the evening eat small meals and visit with friends and family. It is a time of worship and contemplation and a time to strengthen family and community ties.

Leading the celebration for the onset of Ramadan is Maryam Mostoufi. Mostoufi, the Chaplain to the Islamic Community of Springfield, holds a Master of Arts degree in Human Resources Development from the University of Illinois, and became the first Muslim woman to be admitted to the Association of Professional Chaplains.

Mostoufi has spoken and written extensively within the fields of hate crime prevention and intervention, and on issues related to the presence of Muslims in America. She is currently working on a book entitled Islam As A Way of Life: A Guide to the Beliefs and Practices of Muslims, as a part of her Doctorate of Ministry Program at the Ecumenical Theological Seminary at Detroit.
