Notre Dame - St. Anne portal

Notre Dame de Paris Sully

The right portal is dedicated to St. Anne, mother of Mary. In this scene, located at the point of the tympanum's arch, we find a holdover from Romanesque sculptural tradition in the seated Virgin in Majesty with the child Jesus on her lap. This particular figure, as well as others from the upper two-thirds of the tympanum, were carved some sixty years before the construction of the portal on which they now are featured. Their stiffness and lack of expressivement compared with the carvings of the rest of the facade is evident.

Note on the far left the kneeling figure of Bishop Maurice de Sully.
