Aubeterre-sur-Dronne - vaulting, church of St-Jacques

Aubeterre Eglise St Jacques Voute

Until the 12th century, wood was the most common material used in roofing churches. One can still find, on occasion, buildings such as this one whose original roof beams have been preserved. The lightness of wood, as compared with stone, enables these walls to support the roof without the aid of buttresses.
