Course Description

The course is aimed at providing an introduction to special relativity and quantum mechanics in terms of their experimental and theoretical basis. Then, we will move onto the many applications arising from these two topics. We will also try to get to thermodynamics and statistical mechanics if time permits.

Course organization and advice

- There will be four days of class per week and a 2.5-hour lab session each week

- Dr. Spalding is your lab instructor. His web page for the lab is here

- Please turn in all home work assignments on time (usually at the beginning of class on the due day)

- Attempt to do home work assignments on your own. If you have difficulty, please come and see me

- In class, be prepared to answer questions and participate in class discussions and present your solutions to homework problems

APS membership

You should become a member of the American Physical Society. This will help you stay abreast of recent developments in physics and benefit from student services offered by the APS. You can join by visiting their web site and taking advantage of the 1-year free trial membership offer.

Grade breakdown

- Three midterm exams: 3 x 12% = 36%
- Final exam: 20%
- Labs: 24%
- In-class presentation: 6%
- Home work: 14%
