William Lewis Lockwood

"honest and trustworthy through life"
Lockwood was born in New York City and was 18 at the time of the founding of Sigma Chi. He was the only one of the Founders who was not a member of the Deke Fraternity. Known for his organizational and business skills, he is largely responsible for the survival of the young Fraternity.

After graduating in 1858, he returned to New York and was admitted to the Bar. He fought in the Civil War recruiting a company of volunteers which he later led. He was seriously wounded in battle and never fully recovered. He returned to Usequepaugh, Rhode Island buying the local woolen mills and forming the firm of Lockwood, Alpin and Company.

He was the first of the Founders to die, passing in 1867. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York.
