Born on a farm in central Pennsylvania, Jordan was 20 years old when Sigma Chi was founded. He is best remembered for his strong will and determined purpose.
After graduation, he was admitted to the bar, and practiced law in Dayton and Cincinnati. In 1882 he was elected to congress.
In a speech he delivered in 1884, he described the valued criteria for pledging which is now known as the is now known as the Jordan Standard.
He died accidentally in 1890 stepping into an open elevator shaft in downtown Cincinnati. The untimely death was a shock to the city and all courts and businesses were stilled. Jordan is buried in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati.
