Why Use Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL)?
- Using computers in the classroom/course work reaches some students, who are not otherwise excited/or interested in language learning - this is their method of learning
- It will enhance your teaching not replace it
- Provides instant feedback on grammar drills and access to up-to-date authentic cultural materials
- Reduces affective filter
- Research shows it provides a new language modality (explain more when showing chat feature)
- Do not use it merely for the bells and whistles. Always evaluate - do I like this just because it is cool? Or does this have some redemptive pedagogical value for myself and my students that I cannot do otherwise?
A: Before integrating CALL into your own personal curriculum, realistically do the following:
- Assess your time available
- Assess your ratio of technological energy (karma, chi, wa) to desired pedagogical rewards
- Assess your level of technological know-how
- Assess your degree of tech support/equipment and access to experienced colleagues in department or on-line (cyberleagues)- this might take some research
