The IWU Pride Alliance is a student-run organization dedicated to equality for all students regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. We provide socially, politically and by any other means necessary to help ensure the safety and equality for all in the community. The Alliance was reactivated in the fall of 2003.
The Pride Alliance functions both on and off campus. We believe that by educating and informing students on campus we can help to make our community a safer and more accepting place. Some of our recent events on campus include:
Mardi Gras Ball - IWU Pride Alliance's formal, open to campus and community
National Coming Out Day - students share their coming out experiences
Movie nights - films relevant to the GLBTQ community; open to campus
Letter writing campaign to politicians - Valentines writing to local representatives to support gay marriage.
Guest speakers - past speakers include Elizabeth Birch, former chair of the Human Rights
Campaign talking about gay marriage in America, and our formal faculty advisor, Dr. David Fryer,
leading discussion about what it means to be Queer, JAC Stringer
National Day of Silence
Drag Ball - Philanthropy event
Safe Zone - Creates an opportunity for Illinois Wesleyan
community members to reduce homophobia and heterosexism on campus by empowering students,
faculty, and staff members to serve as resources for members of the campus community.
If you are interested in coming to a meeting, do so! Our meetings are on Thursdays at 9:00 PM in the Chapel Basement. All are invited regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Meetings are meant to be a safe atmosphere; attendance of others and what is said should be kept confidential. Meetings and events are open to the public. Nothing should be assumed about anybody.
