In-class writing on Sherry Turkle's article
Your name:
1. On pp. 81-84 of Cyberreader, Sherry Turkle argues for "multiplicity"
and against "the unitary self." in a section called Identity and Multiplicity.
I'm going to assign one paragraph to each of you; write a one-sentence gloss
of your assigned paragraph.
2. Take two different social situations (communicating with your parents
v. with your teacher; communicating with your best friend v. with your brother/sister,
etc.). Briefly summarize how you act in each situation. Then address Turkle's
question about a unitary self. Is there, in the end, some core self common
to both the situations you described?
