IWU Gets Seven All-Conference Soccer Players; Barrett Wins Coaching Honor

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Seven Illinois Wesleyan University men’s and women’s soccer players were chosen to the 2002 all-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin squads in voting by league coaches Tuesday in Wheaton.

For the women, junior midfielder Ann Bernard and sophomore defender Marisa Johnson were chosen to the first team, along with freshmen Mary Karson and Katie Kelly. Senior goalkeeper Alicia Heeger and junior defender Lauren Boegen were named to the second team.

For the men, sophomore defenseman Alan Mila was the lone first team selection.

Second year coach Dave Barrett was chosen as the women’s soccer "Coach of the Year" as he led the Titans to a 4-2-1 third place league finish and an appearance in the CCIW’s first-ever tournament championship game. The women were 13-4-2 overall.

Bernard (St. Charles HS), who has been a first team all-CCIW selection for three straight seasons, scored one goal and added two assists against CCIW opponents this fall.

Johnson (Wayne, St. Charles East HS) led the league with three assists and added one goal in CCIW play.

Karson, a midfielder from St. Charles (HS), scored two goals and had one assist while Kelly, a striker from Wheaton (Wheaton Warrenville South HS), tied for second in the CCIW with five goals and was second in scoring with 11 points.

Heeger (Chesterfield, Mo., Lafayette HS) has been a second team all-CCIW goalkeeper for three seasons and was all-conference as a defender in 1999. This fall she was fourth in the CCIW with a 0.74 goals against average, allowing five goals in seven games and was involved in five shutouts.

Boegen (Waukegan, Warren HS) was a solid defensive player on a team that allowed only five goals in seven games.

Mila (Bartlett, Wheaton Academy), who was also chosen to the all-CCIW team as a freshman, was a defensive player on a team that allowed 2.8 goals per game against CCIW opposition.
