Magic Johnson Scheduled to Speak at
IWU About AIDS Awareness

Nov. 8, 2002

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Earvin “Magic” Johnson has achieved some rather impressive accomplishments on the basketball court. In Johnson’s thirteen years as a player he averaged over 11 assists, 7 rebounds, and almost 20 points per game. He won five NBA championships, won an Olympic gold medal and played with NBA legends such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James Worthy.

On Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. in the Illinois Wesleyan Shirk Center Arena, Johnson will address a more serious issue than basketball. He will discuss HIV/AIDS and the effect the syndrome has had on his life, how the NBA reacted to him, and what kinds of experimental medications have kept him healthy.

Admission for the speech will be free to all IWU students, faculty and staff, and there will be a $5 suggested donation for the rest of the Bloomington/Normal community. All donations will go to the McLean County AIDS Taskforce.
Doors will open at 6 p.m. for a Health Awareness Fair preceding Johnson’s speech. There will be booths at the fair informing visitors about safe sex, HIV/AIDS awareness, and other health concerns.

Johnson’s visit is being sponsored by the Illinois Wesleyan University Student Senate.
