IWU ROTC Honors Veterans Day

Nov. 4, 2002

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – In an effort to honor the lives of those that have fought in America’s wars, the Illinois Wesleyan University ROTC will be holding special events on-campus throughout the day on Nov. 11.

Originally named Armistice Day to honor the end of World War I, Nov. 11th was finally commemorated as Veterans Day in 1954, in lieu of the great number of military veterans from World War II and the Korean War.

The day’s events will begin at 11 a.m. with a ceremony on the Eckley Quadrangle. A ceremonial wreath will be placed around the university flagpole. The names of all IWU alumni who have died while serving our country in the military over the past 100 years will be read aloud. “Taps” will be played during the ceremony.

In the Hansen Student Center there will be a commemorative display with pictures of the IWU campus during World War I and World War II, and at 7 p.m. there will be a panel discussion featuring IWU ROTC members and military personnel from local battalions. Following the panel, the movie “Black Hawk Down” will be played in the student center.

The Veterans Day events will be precluded on Sunday Nov. 10th when IWU students will have the opportunity to pay a visit to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Danville.
