Economics Journal Published by Illinois Wesleyan Undergraduates

The 2003 edition of “The Park Place Economist,” one of the few undergraduate economic journals in the nation, was published this April at Illinois Wesleyan University.

Seven in-depth articles, the products of original research, probe a range of issues including crime and unemployment, the affordability of housing, and horse race betting.

The journal also includes information about alumni of the economics department and information on the current graduating class, as well as articles about the economics of war with Iraq.

Articles in the 2003 edition of “The Park Place Economist” include:

• “Cobweb Adjustment and the Market for New Lawyers,” by Patrick Spangler, a senior economics major from Joliet, Ill.
• “Perils of a Fixed Exchange Rate: The Collapse of the Argentine Economy,” by Alexis Manning, a junior economics major from Lake Forest, Ill.
• “The Relationship between Crime and Unemployment,” by Matthey Melick, an economics major from Danvers, Ill.
• “Gender Gap of Immigrant Groups in the United States,” by Desislava Hristova, a senior economics and math double major from Bulgaria.
• “The Effect of Demand and Supply Factors on the Affordability of Housing,” by Jamie Davenport, a senior economics major and international studies minor from San Diego, Calif.
• “Growth and Income Inequality: Global Evidence,” by Juliana Giraldo, a senior economics and business administration double major from Barranquilla, Colombia.
• “Horse Race Betting and the Stock Market,” by Kristin Smevold, a senior economics and business administration double major from Barrington, Ill.
