Event: Illinois Wesleyan School of Music presents: A jazz master class with world-renowned drumset player, Joel Spencer

Date: March 9, 2003 (Sunday)

Time: 3 p.m.

Admission: Free and open to the public

Location: Westbrook Auditorium, Presser Hall, 1210 Park St., Bloomington

Background: The event will begin with a master class involving Spencer and the IWU jazz combo “Active Ingredient.” The IWU Percussion Ensemble will perform with Spencer on “Suite for Drumset and Percussion.”

Spencer has been a professional musician and educator based out of Chicago for the past 18 years. He has performed with many well-known musicians including Wayne Shorter, Clark Terry, Michael Feinstein, Dorothy Donegan, Chet Baker and Wynton Marsalis. Spencer is currently a member of the John Campbell Trio.

In recent years Spencer has traveled to Europe appearing at Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland.

In 1991 Spencer recorded several pieces for the movie soundtrack of In a League of Their Own and in 1997 played on the soundtrack of the motion picture Hoodlum.
