Background:

Red Torso by Katherine Kadish

On display in the Merwin Gallery will be a collaborative project entitled "Patterns" by Katherine Kadish and Jackie Bartley. Kadish, who lives and works in Yellow Springs, Ohio, has created a group of mixed-media assemblages. These works combine traditional sewing patterns with other elements of garment making which are then layered further with painting and drawing materials.

Bartley, a poet who teaches at Hope College in Holland, Mich., has created a book of poems entitled "Threading the Bobbin" that will be on display with the collage works. A sound installation combining music with passages from the poems will create aural patterns that will complement the visual patterns in Kadish’s works.

Cupie Samurai by Jon Yamashiro

On display in the Wakeley Gallery will be "Talking Story," an exhibition of recent work by Ohio photographer Jon Yamashiro. His black and white photos, containing images of Japanese dolls, toys, and artifacts, explore his Okinawan heritage. Yamashiro’s family history and Hawaiian background serve as the inspiration for his art.

Yamashiro’s work has been exhibited throughout the mid-west. An associate professor art, Yamashiro teaches at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
