Event: University Chapel Hour and Special Events presents: Ash Wednesday Service

Location: Evelyn Chapel, 1301 N. Park St., Bloomington

Background: Assisting University Chaplain Dennis E. Groh at the Ash Wednesday service will be the Rev. Howard Bruce Bowlin, rector of the St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Bloomington.

Prior to coming to Bloomington in 1998, Bowlin served as rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Lockport, N.Y. A music major at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, Bowlin did graduate work in medieval musicology at the University of Colorado and received his Master of Divinity at the Protestant Episcopal Seminary in Alexandria, Va. Bowlin also served in the Marine Corps for 20 years as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Band.

As well as performing duties as Illinois Wesleyan Chaplain, Groh is also a professor of humanities and archaeology. He was previously a professor of the History of Christianity at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and an advisory member of the graduate faculty of Northwestern University in Evanston.

Groh, who graduated from Illinois Wesleyan in 1961 and became Chaplain in 1996, is a specialist in early Christianity and the archaeology of Israel in the Roman and Byzantine periods. He is an ordained elder of the United Methodist Church, and has given addresses at Albion College, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (Israel), Brown University, National Geographic Society Headquarters (Washington, D.C.), Oxford University (England), Princeton University, and the University of Chicago.
