For the second year in a row (and the second time ever), the Illinois Wesleyan men's golf team will participate in the NCAA Division III men's golf championships, which will be May 13-16, at the Chateau Elan Resort in Braselton, Georgia.
The championships will be co-hosted by Emory University and the Gwinnett Sports Commission.
Playing for IWU will be juniors Bennett Blakeman (Burr Ridge, Ill., Lyons Township), Mike DeRuntz (Western Springs, Ill., Lyons Township) and Chris Green (Cary, Ill., Cary-Grove HS) along with sophomores Matt Wennmaker (Oregon, Ill, HS) and Doug Keller (Manteno, Ill., Bishop McNamara).
Green was the medalist of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament last weekend and has a stroke average of 75.6 in 18 rounds. Wennmaker has the lowest team stroke average at 74.8, followed by DeRuntz (74.9), Blakeman (75.4) and Green. Keller averages 78.0 through 16 rounds.
The Titans made the NCAA Division III tournament as a team for the first time last year as an at-large selection. IWU finished 27th after the second day of the 2007 championships and only the low 23 teams made the cut to participate in the final two days.
IWU’s Dan Stoerzbach played as an individual in the 1978, 1979 and 1980 NCAA Division III championships. He earned All-America honors for his 11th place finish in 1979 and placed 33rd in 1978 and 36th in 1980.As a team, IWU competed frequently in the NAIA District 20 tournament and was in the NAIA national meet in 1967 but missed the 36-hole cut.
A total of 180 participants will compete at the 2008 championships. Twenty-five conferences, including the CCIW, were awarded automatic qualification for the championships and Illinois Wesleyan is in by virtue of winning the league tourney last weekend.
Eight teams were selected from Pool B, which consists of independent institutions, and institutions that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification. The final two berths were reserved for Pool C, which are institutions from automatic-qualifying conferences that are not the conference champion and any remaining Pool B teams. The top five individuals are selected from the remaining players who have not qualified with a team.
In addition to Illinois Wesleyan and the host school Emory, other schools selected for the 2008 championships are Penn State-Altoona; Mary Hardin-Baylor; McDaniel; Elizabethtown; Farleigh Dickinson-Florham; Transylvania; Luther; Hope; Knox; Gustavus Adolphus; Williams; Husson; Ohio Wesleyan; Keystone; Linfield; Mount Union; Washington & Lee; Cabrini; Washington & Jefferson; St. Joseph’s (Long Island); La Verne; Oglethorpe; Webster; Methodist; Emory; Huntingdon; LaGrange; Nebraska Wesleyan; St. John Fisher; Skidmore; Wesley; Wisconsin-Eau Claire; Redlands; St. John’s (Minn.).
