The hand of Gislebertus gives this familiar scene a charged, personal touch. The serenity of Mary, Jesus, and their mount contrasts with the fatigue of Joseph, who appears out of breath as he leads the way. It is of course possible that he is not panting but singing, to dispel anxiety and lighten the journey. Either interpretation enlivens, brings the viewer closer to, this familiar scene so often depicted in medieval religious sculpture.
