Founded by the emperor Augustus and named in his honor, «Augustodunum» was located along the strategic commercial route linking Lyon with Boulogne. It rapidly became a rich and prosperous city, and was considered a model of Romanization. It was nicknamed "the Rome of Gaule."

Augustodunum's theatre could seat 20,000 spectators, and as such was the largest of all theatres in Gaule.
