The style of the vault progresses from simple to complex in three stages, as we wander from nave to collateral to choir. Crossing under the nave arcade to the collateral takes us from a classic barrel vault to a fully developed broken-arched, quadripartite vault with diagonal ribs. Proceeding to the choir, we observe another stage in the evolution of vaulting, as the ribbing becomes considerably more delicate and the bays more deeply recessed. In this instance, the diagonal arches rise higher than the transverse arches, in a gesture reminiscent of the vaulting of Anjou traditionally associated with the reign of Heny II Plantagenet.
